Wind Energy Development Feasibility

Wind Energy Development Feasibility

Project and Site Feasibility Services for the Installation of 0.8 – 1 MW Wind Turbine to Power Facility and Provide Additional Competitively Priced Power to the Surrounding Area.

Client: Manufacturing Company

Service Provided: Town Planning and Project and Site Feasibility

Project Summary

Technia Environment and Planning Limited was commissioned to identify a suitable location for the potential installation of a 0.8 – 1 MW wind turbine, to support future on-site renewable energy generation, with the opportunity to offer surplus electricity to neighbouring businesses at competitive rates.

Our role involved undertaking a feasibility study incorporating site selection and constraints identification and analysis to determine viable development sites. A total of six candidate sites were identified and assessed against a range of planning, environmental and technical criterion.

Our Approach

We applied a structured, criteria-led methodology drawing on our in-house expertise in planning and environmental considerations. The approach involved:

  • Identifying potential constraints using data mapping and desktop analysis, including ecological and archaeological designations, landscape character, flood risk, public rights of way, coal mining legacy and contamination;
  • Reviewing relevant national and local planning policies;
  • Considering technical factors such as grid connection proximity, oversail and topple distances;
  • Developing and applying a bespoke assessment framework to compare the suitability of short-listed sites; and
  • Providing clear planning commentary and recommendations within a detailed feasibility report.

Outcome

The feasibility study provided the client with a clear, evidence-based comparison of potential development locations. The findings informed internal investment decisions and set the direction for further technical and environmental investigations in support of a future planning application.
