Wind and Solar Energy Development Feasibility
Feasibility Services for Solar and Wind Energy Generation to Power Facility and Provide Additional Competitively Priced Power to the Surrounding Area
Client: Plastic Solutions Company
Service Provided: Town Planning and Project and Site Feasibility
Project Summary
Technia Environment and Planning Limited was engaged to undertake a feasibility study exploring two renewable energy options: a single 0.8 – 1 MW wind turbine or a roof-mounted solar PV installation. The client sought to identify the most suitable technology and site to reduce energy costs and potentially supply surplus electricity to local businesses.
Separate assessments were conducted to evaluate the viability of each option. For the wind turbine, potential sites were identified and assessed against environmental, technical, and planning constraints. For the solar option, an evaluation of roof suitability and permitted development rights was undertaken.
Our Approach
Our approach involved parallel but distinct feasibility pathways for each technology:
- For wind turbine feasibility, we mapped and analysed candidate sites considering ecological and heritage designations, landscape sensitivity, flood risk, access and grid connection;
- For solar PV, we assessed the structural suitability, available roof area, orientation and planning requirements;
- A detailed review of national and local planning policies was undertaken;
- Grid connection capacity and export potential were reviewed separately for each option; and
- A comprehensive report was prepared outlining the risks, opportunities, and recommendations for each technology to support informed client decision-making.
Outcome
The feasibility assessment and pre-application advice submission provided the client with a clear understanding of the planning risks and opportunities. The findings informed design adjustments and prepared the groundwork for a formal planning application.
